Abstract: Pomegranate may help prevent or treat several disease risk factors, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, oxidative stress, hyperglycemia and inflammatory activities. Some components of pomegranate, such as polyphenols, have been shown to have potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects. The antioxidant potential of pomegranate juice is greater than that of green tea, induced through ellagitannins and hydrosable tannins. Pomegranate juice can reduce macrophage oxidative stress, free radicals and lipid peroxidation. In addition, pomegranate fruit extract inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis, which may lead to its anticarcinogenic effects. Promoter inhibition of some inflammatory markers and their production is blocked through ellagitannins. In this article, we will highlight different studies on the therapeutic effects of pomegranate and its proposed mechanisms of action, as well as our research on the effect of pomegranate juice on blood pressure.
